Your IPS Exam Queries Answered

IPS Officer Ashok Kamte

I write about the IAS exam not just on this blog but on other sites as well. One of my articles on IPS Exam Eligibility is quite popular among IPS Aspirants and currently is the first result for the search term ips exam on Google. As a result many IPS aspirants have commented on that article for information relating to the IPS exam. So I thought why not continue the discussion here so the blog readers can also benefit, particularly those who want to enter the Indian Police Service.

Before you read further I suggest you go through this article on IPS Exam Eligibility as it lists the physical, educational and nationality requirements in detail. This post further expands on that article and answers questions that have been asked there, even if they might seem quite basic to some.

Is there a separate exam for IPS?

No there is no separate exam for IPS. To qualify for the Indian Police Service you have to appear for the Civil Services Exam conducted by the UPSC which is common for IPS, IAS, IFS, IRS, IRTS and other services.

How can I fill the form for IPS exam?

The notification for the civil services exam appears in Employment News and on UPSC website in December every year. The application for the preliminary exam can be submitted online on UPSC web site or through post. The forms are available at the Head Post Offices in your city/town.

What is the procedure of the IPS exam?

The civil services exam of which IPS is also a part is a 3-step process. The preliminary exam, Mains exam, and Personality (Interview) test. A candidate has to clear the preceding stage to qualify for the next. Only the marks of Mains and Interview are counted for determining the final score, the preliminary exam is only qualifying in nature.

Based on your score in Mains and Interview the final ranking is determined.

How can I choose IPS instead of other services?

While filling the Mains form you have to give your order of preference of different services. If you want the IPS write 1 next to it, 2

next to IAS or IRS or IFS (your choice) and so on.

But merely stating your preference does not guarantee selection in IPS. You must also obtain the requisite ranking to get selected into the IPS.

What books are required for IPS?

The books needed depend on the optional subjects selected for the Mains exam. These are the books for Public Administration and books for Prelims. Note that since 2011 the Prelims consists of two papers common to all candidates. As such, the books required for Prelims are the same for all.

Can I attempt IPS exam in the first year of graduation itself?

No you can’t. A minimum graduate degree is required to appear for the civil services (Mains) exam although you can appear for the Prelims provided your graduate degree is awaited and can be produced at the time of filling the Mains form. There is no maximum educational qualification for the IPS or other services.

Suggest tips to become IPS officer?

This blog is all about enabling you to enter the service of your choice, IPS, IAS, IFS, IRS or others. Stay with it and benefit.

    1. DEAR SISTER,there are certain visual criteria for the candidates for the services of the technical class ,e.g. for the distance vision the better eye ( with correction) ought to have a measurement of 6/6 or 6/9 while that of near vision it is of the category J1 ; on the other hand the worse eye may have been categorised with the following classification i.e. distance eye : 6/12 or 6/9 and near vision vision : category J2.in all cases the limit of refractive error permitted +4.00 Pathological Myopia ;the colour vision requirements is of HIGH GRADE ;and the Binoculer vision is needed. The above classification is for the IPS and other police service of Group A & B and IRTS/RPF(i.e. a technical service).for the non-technical class of services these criteria are relaxed. hence having spectacles in use needs the above formality to be fulfilled.more can can be explored from the notification published by the UPSC……………………

  16. Hello Sir,
I know that the max age requirement for IPS is 35 years. But I want to know what is the max age requirement for the combat streams of IPS such as octopus commandos, greyhound commandos etc. And I heard that if one has to get into the combat streams of IPS , he has to be in his early twenties similar to CAPF where the max age limit is 25 years. But if one joins ips in his late twenties he will be given other streams such as law and order, intelligence etc even if he opts for combat streams . Is it True? Please clarify my doubt regarding this?
    Thanking You

I need some help in understanding the UPSC age limit criteria. I’m a resident of Jammu and Kashmir. I was born in 1983 and have lived in Jammu and Kashmir till 2006. Please let me know what will be the age limit for me to attempt UPSC exams? The UPSC website has details like “The person should have ordinarily lived in Jammu and Kashmir from the period of 1980 to 1989” to avail the extension in age limit for Jammu and Kashmir resident. The questions I have are:

    – Will I be eligible for the exam next year?
    – Does the period mean that the person should have lived in J&K all through 1980 till 1989. I was born in 1983, do I fall in the category.

    Please guide.

    Thanks
    Amir
